| 1778 | Robert Barron – Patented a double-acting tumbler lock. |
| 1784 | Joseph Bramah – Patented the safety lock. Which was considered to be unpickable. |
| 1848 | Linus Yale Sr. – Invented a pin-tumbler lock. |
| 1857 | James Sargent – Invented the world’s first key-changable combination lock that was successful. |
| 1861 | Linus Yale Jr. – Improved and patented his father’s pin-tumbler lock. |
| 1862 | Linus Yale Jr. – Invented the modern combination lock. |
| 1873 | James Sargent – Patented a time lock mechanism, which became the prototype used in the contemporary bank vaults. |
| 1916 | Samuel Segal – Invented the first jimmy-proof lock. |
| 1921 | Harry Soref – Patented an improved padlock. |
| 1924 | Harry Soref – Received a patent for a new padlock casing that was strong and chae like the doors to a vault. |










You timeline however interesting is missing a lot of facts, the ancient Egyptians had locking mechanisms, wooden locks and keys were in use as early as 4,000 years ago in Assyria.I particularly like Lock Puzzles!
